This unsurpassed natural experience leads us to overcome the capricious waters of the Great Lake of Nicaragua to reach the Wildlife Reserve Los Guatuzos. The shelter, which occupies a large swath of territory is invaded by amazing forests and wetlands, home and site hosting for a variety of wildlife, among which are rare species of birds. Given its importance and natural relevance, the refuge was declared a Ramsar site in 1997. The reserve has an area of 437 square kilometers, is shaped by a network of rivers and streams remain the most significant Papaturro River whose course we take during our visit to admire the colorful birds of various species that hover the skies and land on the lush trees and logs as long overdue rest and sink into the still waters of Papaturro.
The site takes its name from the prehistoric inhabitants of this region, and were descendants of the tribe of the Corobici. The territories inhabited by Guatuzos has been a relevant point in the history of Nicaragua.
Was referenced by the Aztecs as part of the route for the collection of taxes for the empire, was also known as the Gold Route Moctezuma.
Any season is good to visit the shelter, however, the period from November to September is preferable because October is the month of highest rainfall.
Option 1 : SAN CARLOS – THE WILDLIFE REFUGE GUATUZOS
Departure from San Carlos to Rio Papaturro, gateway to The Wildlife Refuge Guatuzos. Arrival at the village of Papaturro, en route to observe the color and dense foliage of the rainforest, flocks of birds, spiders and white face monkeys.
Of course, do not miss the shy elusive alligators and river turtles resting peacefully on the banks and sandbars in the sun!. Arrival at the Ecology Center to register.
Short briefing with the leaders of the Centre to continue to El Tortuguero in which breed freshwater turtles, caiman (Caiman Cocodrilus). Then continuing down the path we will use suspension bridge from where we can admire in our journey a 180 meters crow flies view.
Visit of the orchid garden to learn and observation of some of the 110 identified species of orchids in the reserve. Lunch at Papaturro community where we hire any of the optional excursions to visit the agro-ecological farms. Dinner and watch out for alligators.Overnight at the Ecology Center.
Option 2: THE WILDLIFE REFUGE GUATUZOS – SAN CARLOS
Breakfast at the nature center and transfer to San Carlos.
