Cantagallo Reserve: Biosphere and Mystery

Option 1

San Juan del Norte – now San Juan de Nicaragua, was founded in 1538, played a leading commercial boom that lasted more than three centuries. In 1847, the Miskito King George Frederic II baptized August Greytown Greytown in homage as the governor of Jamaica, granted Britain the right to land logging.

Arrival at Greytown, capital of the municipality of San Juan de Nicaragua, reception at the port and transfer to hotel.

Lunch and departure to visit the old cemeteries in the city of Greytown, during the transfer you will see all kinds of migratory and resident birds, alligators swimming serenely silent or sunbathing on the banks of the Rio Indio.

It is difficult for the visitor to think that these remains that today are covered by dense foliage were the most important commercial point of Nicaragua.

As we walk the cemeteries Mason, English, Catholic or Spanish, our guides will give us a talk on the lifestyle in the old San Juan, who lived there, the history of the rubber boom.

Observe the imposing old dredger is still immersed in the Indian River as well as the old boats used at the time of the transit route. Arrival and free time to explore this quiet and picturesque village. During dinner there will be a briefing on the expedition to the domain Cantagallo hill and Rama tribes settled in San Juan de Nicaragua.

Option 2: SAN JUAN DEL NORTE – MAQUENQUE – CANTAGALLO

Breakfast and depart around 05:00 AM to Cantagallo and Maquenque to share and visit this community, inhabited by ethnic Rama, direct descendants of the Chibcha Indians.

Remount the still waters of Indian River forest which is inhabited by an impressive diversity of birds and wildlife. If we are lucky we might see the friendly manatee.

Upon our arrival will be greeted by community leaders who will now be leaving our hosts know their customs, rituals and even learn basic words and expressions in the dialect Rama. Lunch, dinner and accommodation in the community where we spend a pleasant evening in the company of its inhabitants, knowing more about culture and history under a night full of mysteries and sounds.

Option 3: CANTAGALLO – LOST CITY – CANTAGALLO

After breakfast, depart on foot to the path that takes us back to the most intrinsic Biosphere Reserve. This day we will be guided by one of the Rama community leaders, as well as our naturalist guide from San Juan de Nicaragua.

This hike requires great physical effort and is therefore recommended for real adventure lovers who are in good physical condition.

At the end of the central path Rama leader tells us whether we take the boat and continued on foot to get into the reserve to reach the site of the basaltic rocks, where we will see lush trees, almond, cedar and exotic flora.

In its discovery in 1998, it was speculated that he had found the lost city of some ancient civilization – the area was also part of the route of the tax collectors of Montezuma – however these impressive rock formations are hexagonal basalt known as columnar, the result of volcanic lava cast took shapes discovered for more than 11 years. Box lunch and return to Rama camp where we stay and dine with the community.

Option 4: CANTAGALLO – SAN JUAN DE NICARAGUA

Cantagallo breakfast and lunch. Rama led by our guide we will have to visit the hot springs. En route see monkeys, wild pigs called peccaries, birds. Indian hostel accommodation.
